Paediatric First Aid (L3 RQF)
This course is for those who might have to identify and manage emergency situations or manage minor everyday occurrences when looking after young children. This qualification meets Ofsted requirements for those working in early years settings and uses the criteria for effective paediatric first aid training found in Appendix 1 of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Practice Guidance document.
The current EYFS statutory framework requires at least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate to be on the premises or outings at all times when children are present.
There are no pre-requisites to attend this course.
Course timings
This a 2 day, face-to-face course. Each day requires 7 contact hours so the course would usually run from 09:00 - 17:00
Course content
- Planning for first aid emergencies involving babies and children
- Dealing with emergencies involving babies and children
- Resuscitating babies and children
- Recognising and dealing with shock in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to anaphylactic shock in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to electric shock in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to bleeding in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to burns and scalds in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to choking in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to suspected fractures in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to head, neck and back injuries in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to cases of poisoning in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to foreign bodies in eyes, ears and noses of babies and children
- Responding appropriately to eye injuries in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to bites and stings in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to the effects of extreme heat and cold in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to febrile convulsions in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to the emergency needs of babies and children with chronic medical conditions, including epilepsy, asthma, sickle cell anaemia and diabetes
- Recognising and responding appropriately to meningitis and other serious sudden illness
Qualification details
This qualification is built from 2 mandatory units of assessment. One unit normally taught per day, modular and progressive training.
- Unit 1 Paediatric Emergency First Aid
- Unit 2 Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury
Candidates who successfully complete this paediatric first aid course will receive an ITC Level 3 Award in Padiatric First Aid (RQF) certificate. The first aid certificate is valid for 3 years.
There are no written exam papers, the course assessment is 100% practical. You must take a full and active part in practising all of the procedures and protocols taught as this provides the trainer with the necessary continual assessment opportunities.
This Level 3 qualification is part of the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), qualification number 603/. The qualification is supported by the sector skills council; Skills for Health and is externally regulated by Ofqual.
